Andy
started his directing career as assistant to directors at The Hague, English
National Opera, Royal Opera of Wallonie (Leige), Opera North, Houston Grand
Opera, LA Opera, Seattle Opera and Cincinnati Opera. He directed Harbour City
Opera's
Suor Angelica in 2013.
Andy has established himself as one of the
leading Freelance Resident Directors at Opera Australia over many years. He first worked for
the company in 2013 assisting Gale Edwards on her of stage production of La Boheme, a production he has revived three
times. Since then he has been a regular guest, assisting Simon Phillips
onL'elisir
d'amore, Bruno Ravella
onFaust, Sir David McVicar on Cosi fan tutteand Marriage of
Figaro, (which he revived
in Melbourne), and Damiano Michieletto on Cavalleria Rusticana andPagliacci, which he also revived in Melbourne.
On the harbour, he has assisted Gale Edwards twice more, on her Carmen and Aida, La Fura Dels Baus on Madame Butterfly, Chen Shi-Zheng onTurandot - also with 2018’s designer, Dan Potra
- and was at the helm last year to revive Gale's Carmen. In 2018 he assisted Simon
Phillips again in reviving hisIl Turco in Italia.
Andy made his debut as director for
Opera Australia in 2018, taking the reins on his first production for the
company this being La
Boheme (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour), which was a great critical success.
