Verdi's Macbeth
Verdi's librettist Francesco Piave needed some encouragement so in a letter to Piave, Verdi said: "This tragedy is one of the greatest creations of the human spirit. If we can't do something great with it, let us at least try to do something out of the ordinary."
Dr. Hannah Mondry, musicologist, pianist and operatic soprano, analysed for us Verdi's Macbeth on Monday 23 October, using the Met Opera's 2008 production with Zeljko Lucic as Macbeth and Maria Guleghina as Lady Macbeth.
